    Causes of Dehydration: Here’s What You Need To Know

    It is clear that hot summer most often causes the need to increase water consumption, but there are still many reasons and circumstances in which we lose water, which simply needs to be replenished. In this article, we will discuss the most common reasons for dehydration.

    1. Loss Of Fluid During Sleep

    At night, we lose water not only by sweating but also by exhaling air. And the hotter it is in the bedroom, the drier the air, the warmer our blanket, and the greater these losses. There can be about a 1-liter loss of water during sleep. This is why it is worth compensating for dehydration in the morning by drinking at least two glasses of water.

    2. Alcohol Consumption

    Alcohol makes it much more difficult for the body to reabsorb water. This is because it blocks the antidiuretic hormone, which helps the kidneys to reabsorb water. As a result, frequent urination is observed and, accordingly, dehydration. And the symptoms of a morning hangover after an evening libation are precisely the symptoms of dehydration. In some cases, beer or champagne causes rapid and abundant urination.

    The normal amount of urination is from two to six times a day and way varies from person to person. And frequent urination may depend on a person’s health condition. For some people, five times a day is a lot. The reasons for it can be pregnancy, undiagnosed diseases (diabetes), or taking certain medications.

    Two other non-physiological options for fluid loss are diarrhea and vomiting, leading to significant dehydration, especially in children. But even in adults, diseases such as food poisoning, dysentery, cholera, and some others can even lead to death.

    Not only because of the loss of water itself but also because of the elimination of electrolytes with it, which are necessary for the normal functioning of the brain and heart muscle. Therefore, taking in sufficient quantities is required in case of food poisoning and other diseases accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting.

    6. Tea, Coffee, And Caffeinated Drinks

    Frequent consumption of coffee, teas (especially herbal teas with a diuretic effect), and caffeinated drinks (such as cola, energy drinks) can cause dehydration. Thus, it is better to replace such drinks with healthy ones in order to avoid dehydration.

    7. Chronic Diseases

    As noted above, undiagnosed or overlooked medical conditions can cause frequent urination and significant water loss. Diseases of the cardiovascular system and kidneys can also cause dehydration. You need to consult a doctor, if you are not feeling well. It is possible that dehydration may be because of a medical condition that you are not aware of.

    8. Medicines And Herbs

    Certain medications may also cause increased urination among some people. For example, diuretics are used in the complex therapy of hypertension, removal of tissue edema, and in the treatment of toxicosis and gestosis of pregnant women. If an excessive fluid loss occurs when using drugs, then ask your doctor to replace the drug or reduce the dosage.

    When a press is in a state of stress, vasoconstriction occurs. It means that the amount of oxygen delivered to the tissues of the body decreases. In such a situation of oxygen starvation, the human body compensatory produces more urine and sweat. Many may have noticed those hot flashes in moments of stress, and the word “cold sweat” is not just a literary exaggeration. 

    If an adult or a child has any kind of stress (psychological, physical) for a long time, then frequent urination begins to cause discomfort. In this situation, you should understand and identify the cause of the stress. After eliminating the cause, the problem with the frequency of going to the toilet will automatically be removed.
