Lucas Paulo, 23, the adopted son of the ex-bishop of the Universal Church, Alfredo Paulo, was arrested as a suspect in murdering his mother with 20 stabs, in Seixal, near Lisbon, in Portugal. According to the local press, Teresa, 53, was found dead by her husband at about 8:15 pm on Monday with several injuries to the chest, neck, back, and arms. He called for help and called the police. Teresa was killed with a kitchen knife, found on the spot.
As the TV news “Portugal no Ar” found, discussions between the victim and her son were frequent, usually motivated by the mother’s dismay at seeing her son all day at home, without working or studying. Lucas Paulo is Brazilian and was adopted as a baby by the woman he killed and by Alfredo Paulo.
The young man was arrested at dawn this Tuesday during an escape attempt from Lisbon. According to the Portuguese newspaper “Correio da Manhã”, he will be quarantined for 14 days in the Lisbon Prison, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and then he will be sent to the Montijo prison, where he will await trial.
Alfredo was a staunch critic of the Universal Church. In 2019, he was ordered by the Rio de Janeiro court to pay fines and indemnities that already exceed R $ 1.8 million for members of the institution. For Judge Raquel de Oliveira, holder of the 6th Regional Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), the ex-bishop’s statements “violated Universal’s honor and reputation”. “Paulo was abusive and excessive in criticism and, thus, exceeded the limit of his legitimate right to free expression, causing intense and repeated damage to the image of the Institution”, explained the magistrate at the time. Universal published the news of the death on its official website. “Universal regrets what happened and expresses its grief and prayers to the family,” he wrote.
